Whether it's bringing the house down with lightning speed fiddle tunes, playing a beautiful waltz, creating stunning vocal harmonies, or ripping up a driving bluegrass or original song, Splittin' Hairs is sure to entertain a crowd and have a good time doing it. This versatile guitar and fiddle duo, powered by Melissa Bragdon and Matt Shipman, evolved from what started between breaks at a bluegrass jam 5 years ago into the high energy Celtic, bluegrass, folk band it is today. Drawing heavily from traditional music, this duo re-works old tunes into rousing and entertaining music as well as writing their own songs and melodies.
Matt and Melissa have both been known to play with other groups throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Matt is often found pickin’ with the Slant 6 Bluegrass and High Range. Melissa can be seen fiddling with the Jerks of Grass . The duo keeps people coming back with their enthusiasm and infectious energy. Matt Shipman currently of Portland, ME is a singer/songwriter as well and has been playing guitar, mandolin, and banjo for many years now. He has been touring locally and beyond for over 6 years now from Maine to Wyoming to Tennessee. His latest CD “Highway Shoes” was released in August 2006 and is has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Folks from the Portsmouth area joined him on the recording such as members of the Mill City Ramblers, High Range, as well as Roger Williams, Joyce Andersen, Jon Nolan and more. He also teaches music lessons at 317 Main St. Community Music School in Yarmouth.
Melissa Bragdon also currently living in Portland, Maine and has been playing the violin since she was 9 years old and it shows. She has been playing classical music from the beginning and has been fiddling for several years now. She often wins or places in the top 3 in fiddle competitions. She is known for her high energy and spirited style of playing and keeping right up with fast tempo bands like the Jerks of Grass. She also plays a beautiful waltz, sings and writes tunes as well. Melissa currently teaches lessons and ensembles at 317 Main St. Community Music School in Yarmouth.
